We
are an independent local self-help group/voluntary association of people
who care for children in and around Oxford. We
particularly welcome new parents and parents who are new to Oxford. We
provide local information, support and advice for parents through:
- Oxford
for the Under-Eights, our fully-indexed 256-page guide to the various
facilities on offer in Oxford, from antenatal care to going to school
and beyond. Subjects covered include healthcare, support services,
recreational facilities, eating out and childcare, with maps and contact
details.
- Magazines,
circulated to Members three times a year, each 40-page issue contains
a pull-out day-by-day local What's On for the coming months and useful
articles and information to keep. We do not include paid advertisements
in the book or the magazines; all facilities are included only if
recommended by local parents.
- E-group
- an active local forum through which Members can get speedy knowledgeable
advice
or assistance
from other local parents on anything from borrowing buggies, buying/selling
secondhand baby equipment or finding child-friendly mobile hairdressers
to organising a nanny-share.
We
also organise social and educational opportunities. These vary from time
to time, depending on demand from members and availability of volunteers.
They have included:
- "PEEP"
(early education) groups - weekly structured meetings, focusing on
child development and how to make the most of the time you spend with
your baby
- coffee
groups - informal chat sessions in people's homes
- baby
workshops - one-day introductions to baby music, baby massage, aromatherapy,
postnatal exercise etc
- parties
- social opportunities for the whole family at Easter and/or Christmas,
incorporating entertainments and arts & craft
- pub
evenings - lighthearted learning, led by local experts on a wide range
of parenting issues (eg sleep counsellors, child development experts
and researchers, nutritionists, education professionals)
Annual
